(Cond: copper-clad metal, good color & patina, some good wear) cf. Jennings Brothers Manufacturer Company commenced operations as metal smiths, circa 1892, in Bridgeport Connecticut. The firm is best known for their finely hand-crafted art metal work produced in the 1920’s through 1930’s. Early during the decade of the 1940’s Jennings Brothers refocused their production on the war effort.

Volume I includes a tipped in document dated Washington, 1861, signed by Abraham Lincoln with creases from folding. In the partly printed documents, Lincoln authorizes the Secretary of State William Henry Seward to affix a seal of the United States to the envelope of his Majesty the King of Prussia (Mr. Wrights recall). Volume I shows cracking to boards and some discoloration. Volume II has minor scuffing to spine. Volume IV shows cracking to top of spine. Volume IX shows cracking to spine. All other volumes show minor scuffing.

Chicago: Browne & Howell Company 1913. 2 vols. 26 vols. 8vo bound in full levant gilt-ruled morocco by Monastery Hill Bindery t.e.g. The Gettysburg Edition limited to 700 sets the present set is extended to 26 vols. with the inclusion of the Large Paper edition of The Every-day Life of Abraham Lincoln and contains 142 autographed letters signature and documents and 465 extra illustrations. It is made even more attractive by the addition of folio-sized collection of engravings of Lincoln's cabinet and generals and signers of the Declaration of Independence 4to bound in full red levant morocco silk endpapers. A matching leather-bound volume contains an alphabetical index identifying the autographs and their locations within the set [the autographs are typically bound in the final volume - the present set has them bound within the text at appropriate junctures]. Each is transcribed. A listing and location of the extra-illustrations portraits battle scenes and facsimile documents is presented in a separate cloth volume. The collection contains autograph signatures of Lincoln ten Presidents and Jefferson Davis as well as a broad assemblage of autographs including Robert E. Lee Grant Sherman Sheridan Hooker Scott Hood Meade Beauregard Hamlin and Seward to name a few. A fine letter from Fessenden to Webster should be noted as well as a letter from West Point Cadet James Fry pertaining to the readiness of the army. The present set was originally owned by an employee of the Monastery Hill Bindery and is without precedent at auction for the number of autographs it includes and the quality of the presentation.
